Courses
Fundamentals of GIS
(EV 555, fall semester, 3 credit hours)
This course mainly focuses on the history and concepts of GIS, geospatial data sources, and geodatabase development. Special emphasis will be placed on geospatial data processing and GIS applications in environmental sciences. Basic computer skills will be taught before I discuss GIS stuff since they are necessary skills to complete the course’s laboratory exercises. Students need to complete a paper and give their presentations at the end of this semester as part of this course. Undergraduate students may enroll in the course with the permission of instructor.
Applications of GIS
(EV 556, spring semester, even-numbered years, 3 credit hours)
This is a technical GIS course offering concentrating on geospatial and attribute data collection, processing, and analyses. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to gain hands-on experience on data collection, mapping, geospatial and attribute data manipulations, and spatial analysis and modeling. Special emphasis will be placed on geospatial data processing and GIS applications in environmental sciences. Knowledge of GIS concepts, basic GIS and computer skills are recommended since they are necessary skills to complete the course’s laboratory exercises and projects. Students need to complete a paper and give their presentations at the end of this semester as part of this course. Undergraduate students may enroll in the course with the permission of instructor.

ESRI Authorized Training Course: Introduction to ArcGIS I (Taught through Professional Development & Lifelong Learning Center (PDLLC), year round, 1.6 Continuing Education Units)
This course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to query a GIS database, manipulate tabular data, edit spatial and attribute data, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. Participants learn how to use ArcMap™, ArcCatalog™, and ArcToolbox™ and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution.

ESRI Authorized Training Course: ArcGIS Desktop II:
Tools and Functionality (Taught through PIP, year round, 2.4 Continuing Education Units)
This course teaches the range of functionality available in the software and the essential tools for visualizing, creating, managing, and analyzing geographic data. The hands-on course exercises emphasize practice with ArcMap and ArcCatalog (the primary applications included with ArcGIS Desktop software) to perform common GIS tasks and workflows. The tools for creating and managing geographic data, displaying data on maps in different ways, and combining and analyzing data to discover patterns and relationships are highlighted, and you learn how ArcGIS Desktop provides a complete GIS software solution. By the end of the course, you will be prepared to start working with the software on your own.
ESRI Authorized Training Course: Working with ArcGIS Spatial Analyst
Analyst (Taught through PIP, year round, 2.4 Continuing Education Units)
This course teaches basic raster concepts and shows how to use ArcGIS Spatial Analyst tools to create, run, and edit spatial models. It focuses on problems that are best solved in a raster environment such as surface analysis and distance measurement. Participants are shown how to use the raster tools in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst and learn how to build grid-based datasets.
